Is Halloween dying or do I currently live in an area where people can’t be bothered with it? Some of my favorite childhood memories revolve around Halloween trick or treating. It wasn’t the candy, but rather the excitement of seeing how each neighbor had spooked out their house. In that place, at that time, there were very few homes that weren’t decorated for the date.
In this place, at this time, things are quite the opposite. How disappointing. Both this year, and the year before, I actually found myself thinking, Why bother? when October raised it’s pumpkin head. But no, no. That would be giving in. As long as kids keep showing up at my door shouting, “Trick or treat!” I will keep decorating.
As for my neighbors, perhaps I should hand out toilet paper and eggs with the candy. 😉

Love this photo. I know what you mean. I have been in this country for 3 years and never had trick or treaters at my door. I only noticed decorations on some houses. At least you still get pesty people..I mean, trick or treaters at your door. 😉

Thank you! We are the only decorated house in our neighborhood so far this year. Last year, there were a couple of other homes too, but they haven’t done anything yet. I love seeing the dressed up little pesty people. 😉

There’s no Halloween in France (except for commercial reasons), this is not a Latine or Catholic celebration. Anyway I played with make up and dressing-up when I was younger and I still watch horror movies!

Haha! That happens to me too, when I comment from the phone. I get cut off or the comment lands in the wrong spot. You did both. Bravo! Thanks. I wouldn’t call it amazing though. We’ve simplified, and it’s pretty much just the lighting and carved pumpkins these days. Pretty glowy flickering things.

Despite decorations, I didn’t get any treat or treaters last year. I attribute it to a sign of the times. I can remember a Halloween that fell on a Friday and we stayed out until there were no more homes with porch lights on and even then we hung out in the park until curfew. Our parents encouraged us to get out and do things, now children are behind the television and video games and have a hard time walking more than 3 blocks. It’s sad, but I think we are seeing the last of the hooligans….
(I just adore your pic!)

Maybe you will get trick or treaters at your new house. We used to do the same thing! Once all of the porch lights were out, we would just sit on the street curb and hang out for a while, taking in the fabulous evening. Yep, I think we are looking at a generation of kids whose activities consist mostly of sitting in front of screens. The trick or treaters that we get are mostly the wee youngsters, who have to be helped up onto the porch by their parents. Then, there is also the shopping mall trick or treat event, and the parking lot “safe” Halloween. All that I can think of there is, Seriously?! How can a mall or parking lot full of strangers be safer than your own neighborhood? Plus, once again, no spooky decorated houses.

They miss the point of being a kid. There is no adventure or risk to this generation. I am not looking forward to them taking the reigns some day. We’ll all be wearing safety helmets in the bathtub in case we slip and fall 🙂

They will probably strap us into timed safety dunker harnesses with no suds in the tub, least we might inhale them and choke. 😛
